Bovello, Joe

Trumpeter. Joseph Placido Bovello born December 18, 1929 in Washington, D.C.; died May 7, 1998 in Silver Spring, Maryland.

Began studying trumpet at age 13. Attended Eastern High School. Served in the U.S. Marine Corps (1950-1952). Worked at Merry-Land with Bill Potts in 1957. Recorded with Freddy Merkle in 1958. Led a big band in the early 1960s at Crossroads, with a performance at the 1961 Lorton Jazz Festival. He led a small group at French Quarter in 1963, then a big band again at Casino Royal (1963-1964), playing for dancing and accompanying visiting artists. Recorded with Bill Potts in 1987.
