My wife and I went to Charlie’s in the early 1980’s to celebrate our wedding anniversary. I remember a large, very empty parking lot under the Whitehurst Freeway. We were young and only married a few years and this was our first high class dinner and show featuring the Charlie Byrd Trio. I was startled by our waiter flipping my napkin onto my lap. The food was delicious though I don’t remember what we had. The music was sublime. We were worried because we didn’t see a credit card sign in the window and we didn’t have much cash. Fortunately they took cards. My wife got stuck in the ladies room when she couldn’t get the stall door open. She had to crawl under the door on her hands and knees. At least the floor was spotless. We then got into a fight trying to find the exit. We finally made it out and it was quite late as we headed home to our apartment in Alexandria. All in all we had a great time.
