Nimitz, Jack

Baritone saxophonist. Jack Jerome Nimetz born January 11, 1930 in Washington, D.C.; died June 10, 2009 in Studio City, California.

Member of THE Orchestra (1951-1953). Also played with Bob Astor, Daryl Harpa, Mert Oliver.

Joined Woody Herman’s Third Herd, touring and recording from 1953 to 1955, then played with Stan Kenton in 1956 and again from 1959 to 1960. When not touring, appeared in local Washington clubs such as the Vineyard as a leader (1956-1957) and with others including Bill Potts and Dick Williams. Recorded one session as a leader for ABC-Paramount in 1957, unreleased until 2008.

Relocated to Los Angeles in 1960 where he was active in studio work, appearing on hundreds of recordings. Was a member of Supersax (1973-1988). Four albums as a leader between 1995 and 2007.
