Drummer. Harry T. Saunders born January 17, 1933 in Washington, D.C.; died October 12, 1994.
Brother of drummer Billy Saunders (William Russell Saunders, d. August 29, 1978).
Member of Shirley Horn’s trio in 1960. Recorded with Sonny Rollins in 1962. Worked in a trio with John Malachi and Keter Betts behind numerous visiting artists at the Showboat Lounge in the 1960s.

Around 1968-69, I was a fledgling bass player and worked with both Stump and Billy Saunders at Ed Murphy’s Supper Club in DC. John did all he could to make a bassist out of me, but it wasn’t to be. Billy and I worked together in the Sharon Ridley Trio at the same venue. The experience was invaluable, however, giving me a healthy respect for what it takes to be a good musician. My talent as a bassist was nil, but I discovered that if I have a musical talent, it is in songwriting.
Rest in peace Stump, Billy and John!
