Hi Michael.
Great site, thanks for all of your efforts.
I believe Stan Getz & Astrud Gilberto played in Washington DC in 1964, probably June. I’m not sure of the venue, but you have Getz having played at Shadows in 1964. Would you have any insights on this?
Many thanks,
Marcodema
Thanks for your kind words.
According to review by John Segraves in Washington Evening Star 6/4/64 p.B11, the Getz group at The Shadows was only a quartet, with Gary Burton (vib), Gene Cherico (b, misspelled as Trigo), Joe Hunt (d). So no Gilberto, at least on that particular evening.
Astrud Gilberto did appear with Getz later in 1964: at Newport (July 3), Berkeley Community Center (Oct. 24), Penthouse in Cincinnati (Nov. 6), probably more. Getz was in DC at the Cellar Door with the same group in January 1965, but still no Astrud Gilberto. His guest for that gig was Carlos Barbosa Lyra.
In terms of DC, Getz and Astrud Gilberto appeared at Carter Barron Amphitheater for a week in August 1965 – any chance that could be what you seek?
Actually, I think I got it – Getz appeared from June 22 to 28, 1964 at Carter Barron Amphitheater. Quartet (same as at Shadows) plus special guests Antonio Carlos Jobim and Astrud Gilberto. This was a double bill with the Kingston Trio. Review by Harry McArthur appears in Washington Evening Star 6/23/64 p.A12 – it doesn’t mention Jobim, but definitely confirms Gilberto.
Hope this helps – please let me know if I can be of any further assistance.
Thank you so much Michael. That helps a lot.
Cheers,
Marcodema
