Sweet Chariot

April 28, 2019 By Michael Fitzgerald Leave a Comment

1001 Wesley Pl., SW

Opened August 3, 1976. Closed by November 1976. Open Tuesdays through Sundays.

Room capacity of 200, plus bar holding 100.

Owned by Al Dale and Sally Longhi. Formerly The Place Where Louie Dwells.

Artists

  • Elvin Jones (1976)
  • Betty Carter (1976)
  • Groove Holmes and Brenda Jones (1976)
  • Redd Holt (1976)
  • Dagarti (1976)
  • East Coast Offering (1976)
  • Charles Tolliver (1976)
  • Jon Lucien (1976)
  • Houston Person and Etta Jones (1976)

Lucien engagement is not confirmed. Mentions of Nat Adderley appearing seem to have been premature, as Charles Tolliver definitely performed during the dates in question (reviews published in both Washington Post and Washington Star). Likewise, a Rahsaan Roland Kirk engagement was mentioned as being planned, but during the dates in question Kirk performed at the Showboat in Silver Spring, MD.

Billboard (12/4/76) reported that club “has fallen on hard times and cut back on its offerings,” but Washington Star (11/13/76) had already reported its demise.
