Deppenschmidt, Buddy

Drummer. William Henry Deppenschmidt, III born February 16, 1936 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Father was a professional saxophonist, working at the Roxy-Mastbaum Theater in Philadelphia in the 1930s. Family moved to Richmond, Virginia in 1940. Attended Thomas Jefferson High School in Richmond, Virginia.

Played with pianist Newton Thomas (1954-1960).

From 1960 to 1962 was a member of the Charlie Byrd trio. He traveled with Byrd to South America in 1961. Participated in the Jazz Samba recording session.

Worked with Tee Carson at Shoreham Hotel’s Marquee Lounge (1962-1963). Performed with Bola Sete at the Showboat Lounge in 1963.

Relocated to Pennsylvania and worked with John Coates, Jr. (1964-1978). Still active as a performer and teacher.
